The coldest months in the Northeast are a bane to many, but the weather also provides precious planning time for those daydreaming of warm growing seasons. It’s not surprising that CPTV chose the coldest winter months to release a program highlighting newly redesigned beautiful summer homes and gardens and the design process behind them. The program “Design Secrets with Ed Hollander” is a walk-through of two impressive properties in New York’s Hamptons. The ideas and design processes presented are classic and worthwhile, even for small gardens.

Ed Hollander, a renowned landscape architect, presents the episodes. Hollander discusses the collaboration of two exterior home architecture and landscape architecture projects with architects Tom Kligerman, the Linden Hill property architect, and Peter Pennoyer, the architect for Topping Farm.

Hollender’s horticulture background is evident as he shares the benefits of specific varietal selections for each space and how the designs seamlessly combine the existing with the new. Throughout the tours, he notes various selections, such as espalier selections that enclose vegetable gardens, and points out existing trees such as fern-leafed beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Asplenifolia’) in their multi-generational grandeur.

These programs are produced by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, with funding from Bunny Mellon Curricula, a landscape architecture-focused learning program, and support from the Gerard B. Lamber Foundation. The two-part series offers both a pleasant summer tour and insight into the minds of designers and architects.
